Oceania boasts to a dynamic fintech landscape. This landscape is led by Australia, which is home to over 800 fintech companies spread across all states and territory capitals.
The Australian fintech market was valued at AUD 45 billion (US$29.5 billion) in 2023, marking an astonishing 17,900% increase from AUD 250 million (US$164 million) in 2015, according to industry trade group Fintech Australia. This growth has propelled the rise of global fintech leaders including Zip, Afterpay, and Airwallex.
Zip is a buy now, pay later (BNPL) company founded in Sydney in 2013. The company, which listed publicly in Australia in 2015, holds a market capitalization of about AUD 5.27 billion (US$3.5 billion). It is now reportedly considering a listing on the US Nasdaq after reporting strong performance of its US business, which achieved a 41.6% growth in total transaction volume in the year ending June 30.
Afterpay is another prominent Australian fintech player in the BNPL space founded in 2014 in Sydney. Afterpay was acquired by Block in 2022, and now serves over 24 million customers, and more than 348,000 merchants across Australia, Canada, New Zealand, the US, and the UK, where it is called Clearpay.
Airwallex, meanwhile, was founded in Melbourne in 2015. The company, which is valued at US$5.5 billion, provides global business banking, cross-border payments and foreign exchange services, claiming more than 150,000 business customers, and US$200 billion in global payments processed annually.
New Zealand, while smaller in scale, has also produced world-class fintech ventures, most notably Xero. Founded in Wellington, Xero is a global leader in cloud-based accounting software with over 4.2 million subscribers globally, and a market capitalization of AUD 25.2 billion (US$16.5 billion).
